Out of control

Industry conducts and commissions tests on its own products (see SCCNFP, 1999). The perfume industry is allowed to insinuate its chemicals into almost every aspect of our lives. Artificial perfumes are added to medications, sanitary pads, flavourings, spices, household and industrial products and more.

Even though the European Cosmetics Directive requires a duty of care from companies manufacturing personal care products, it would be practically impossible to screen all of them and all the perfume chemicals they contain for potential links with illnesses that may result years or even decades later.

Furthermore, not all perfume chemicals themselves will have to be safety-tested under the new EU legislation REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals).
